How does a pressure care mattress work?

Pressure care mattresses work to reduce the pressure between the user’s skin and the mattress surface whilst laying or sitting up in bed. Their purpose is to prevent and even heal the occurrence of pressure ulcers, a highly painful injury caused by spending extended periods in bed.

Pressure care mattresses are available in different levels of risk categories, providing increasing levels of pressure redistribution for users who are either more at risk or who already have pressure ulcers.

Mattresses for lower risk users may be constructed from castellated foam, whereas for more at-risk users they may be constructed with air cells and feature an electric air pump that inflates and deflates air through cells on a cycle.

Hybrid mattresses are also available which combine the technology of foam and air mattresses to provide pressure relieving benefits on a highly comfortable sleeping surface.

Pressure mattresses are an essential part of care for users who are likely to spend extended periods in bed, particularly those with limited mobility who will struggle to reposition themselves. They are used heavily by care home residents and individuals living in their own homes.
